When the Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood was first introduced 27 years ago, the 'wood finishing' technique had not even been heard of before. Now it is something is commonly done by many other brands. This single malt spends a minimum of 12 years in ex-bourbon American oak barrels and hogshead, and is then aged for another 9 months in Spanish oak ex-Oloroso sherry casks. It is then left in a larger tun for another 3-4 months for all the whiskies to marry. The results are rich and complex, as you would expect from double aged or finished Scotch. On the nose, it is sweet, with vanilla from the American oak and nuttiness from the Oloroso. Superbly integrated, with the bourbon character moving into the sherry finish. Hints of vanilla, oak woodiness, spices of nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, and nuts. Long warming finish. A thoroughly enjoyable single malt – a favourite of connoisseurs and also perfect for those who are just beginning their journey into single malt Scotch.
