Back in 1998 after a 5 year refit Benromach Distillery was reopened. Owned by the Urquharts (the family who also own and run Gordon & Macphail) This Speyside distillery is steeped in tradition. It was traditional before commerical maltings to add a touch of peat to the fires to give the whisky a distinct touch of smoke. Benromach stick to this lost style. The 15 year old has spent time in both ex-Burbon and ex-Sherry but with more of an emphasis on Sherry. This whisky is for fans of the traditional style. A sweet tofffe nose with black pepper a peat smoke on the nose. The peat smoke is also apparent on the palate but towards the end, after the ripe apples, charred oak and malt have played their part. A creamy finish with smoke and dried fruit.
