Laphroaig is another cult favourite amongst whisky connoisseurs, with classic flavours of smoke, peat and very medicinal, think iodine. Here, the distillery takes its great spirit and finishes it in smaller 'quarter casks', which are 4 times the size of the usual ones used. Why? To age a drop faster but to also have greater wood influence. The Laphroaig Quarter Cask is easier to appreciate and drink compared to the standard 10 Year Old, so for many who find the 10YO to be too intense, this is a perfect bottle to learn to love the smoky qualities that the distillery and island have to offer. A big pungent nose but not harsh. Sweet also with chocolate and cinnamon lurking at the back. The sweetness is then very apparent in the initial taste, which melds into sweet cereal, cola and then rick smoke and peat. The oak influence is found throughout. The finish is long sweet smoky and oaky. Drink neat for sure.
