Hailing from the Black Forest in Germany, Monkey 47 is bottled at 47% ABV and contains a whopping 47 botanicals, including lingonberries, bramble leaves, acacia flowers, and Angelica root from the Black Forest, six types of pepper, blackberries, honeysuckle, nutmeg, and many, many more. The Black Forest has had a long history of distillation, mainly with fruit brandies and eau de vies, so making a gin comes naturally to them. Distilled with a custom Holstein still, this gin has become a cult favourite, and can be enjoyed as a complex drink with many different notes and flavours. The nose is herbaceous and floral, the palate starts with light green herbs moving into darker woodier varitels, and with juniper in the middle. This progresses into peppery vegetal notes. The finish is oily with berries, fruit and a faint green aftertaste. One to savour, and great in many different cocktails.
